GEEK GAL of the MONTH: Claire Max

Posted on July 1, 2011

Comic-Con is only weeks away, so why not have a comic book lover be our July Geek Gal of the Month? This lovely lady right here Claire Max. She's a model, cosplayer and all around geek gal. She's been cosplaying for almost ten years now, making her own costumes and going to tons of conventions.

C4G: Hey Claire! Let's start off with you introducing yourself to all of our readers.

Claire: Hi all! I'm Claire Max. I'm a cosplayer and generally a huge geek. I'm originally from Pittsburgh, PA, but now I live in Colorado with my fiancé. As for what I do, I'm currently a student studying fashion design, and in my spare time I make fun clothes to sell! I'm also an avid reader, and I'm obsessed with Neil Gaiman.

C4G: How about telling us five fun facts about yourself.

1. I have prehensile toes. I can pick things up with them.
2. I hate clowns, they don't scare me so much as I just find them ugly and weird.
3. I love to sleep. I'd spend all my time doing it if I didn't have other things that needed doing.
4. I was a competitive dancer for 15 years, and a fencer for five.
5. I can speak Spanish conversationally, and some Japanese, though I'd really like to learn more. I took a year of it in college.

C4G: So Claire, you seem to be pretty passionate about cosplay. Tell us, what initially got you into cosplaying, and how long have you been doing it? What's your favorite thing about dressing up?

Claire: I made my very first costume in 2001, when I went to my first convention. It was a small anime con, but I had such an awesome time, and my costume won a hall cosplay award! I was 14 then, I've been doing it ever since! I'd have to say my favorite thing about dressing up is just getting to represent my favorite characters, and pretending to be them for a day. And when little kids come up and want hugs or pictures with me, that's awesome too!

C4G: What costumes are you currently working on?

Claire: I've got a pretty full roster for SDCC. I make all of my costumes as well as most of Clyde's (my fiancé) so it's a lot of work! Right now, I'm making movie-version Captain America for him and a USO girl to go along with it for me. I'm also working on Black Adam and Isis, and Martian Maneater (with the Gender-bent JLA) for SDCC as well. Like I said, lots of work!

C4G: Any upcoming cons you plan on going to?

Claire: SDCC is my next one! Dragoncon is tentative though. I'd really like to go, but real life might get in the way.

C4G: I'm going to take a wild guess and say you read comics.

Claire: Haha, of course I read comics! I'd be a pretty poor nerd if I didn't.

C4G: How long have you been reading? Have any favorite series?

Claire: I've been reading them about as long as I've been reading, though I really got into them in my awkward tween years (11-13). I was kind of unpopular and had a hard time making friends, so I took to books and comics as kind of an escape. Back then I loved the X-men, and still do! A lot of my more recent favorites are those with badass female protagonists, like Scarlet and Hack/Slash. And of course I love-love-love-LOVE the Sandman series! Death is the best.

C4G: Okay, so you're a mutant trying to choose sides amongst the X-Men and Magneto's Brotherhood. Which would you choose, and what would your power be?

Claire: Definitely the X-Men. Though radical groups like the Brotherhood often have good intentions, they go about it the wrong way, I think. As for my mutant power... that's a tough one. I think it would probably be the ability to charm people into doing what I want, kind of like Dazzler. I can be very charming when I want to be.

C4G: Do you have a favorite writer(s)?

Claire: Neil Gaiman, Neil Gaiman, Neil Gaiman, Neil Gaiman... and did I mention Neil Gaiman?! I think I've read every comic he's written or co-written, from Sandman to The Eternals to Marvel 1602. And of course all of his novels. Neverwhere and American Gods are my favorites.

C4G: Let's talk movies! If you can only watch one movie for the rest of your life, what would that be and why?

Claire: Oh damn, this is a REALLY hard one! Maybe Fight Club. That movie just sort of makes me want to go out and do things.

C4G: There's a ton highly anticipated films coming out. Is there any particular film that you're really anxious to see?

Claire: Definitely the Captain America movie! it looks like it's going to be a great adaptation. I also haven't seen X-men: First Class yet. I'm pretty behind, I know, but I'm really excited about that. Oh, and Cowboys and Aliens looks badass!

C4G: Did you know Hollywood is planning on making movies based off of board games like Battleship, Risk and even the Ouija board? What random board game would you like to see turn into a movie?

Claire: Haha! Seems like they're really hurting for movie ideas. They should make one of Pretty Pretty Princess, just for the sheer ridiculousness of it.

C4G: What are you currently watching on television right now?

Claire: Just finished watching Game of Thrones, which was amazing. I can't wait for season 2.

C4G: Do you have any other geeky hobbies?

Claire: I do love video games, though I have very poor dedication. Having a short attention span means that I can't sit around and game for hours like some do. And I almost never beat any games. I just play until I get bored of them then move on to another. I currently play DC Universe Online, though not as often as Clyde would like me to. We just recently got an Xbox, so I'm kind of amused by Dance Central for the Kinect. Favorite games of all time are Portal, Left 4 Dead, and Dead Space. I like killing zombies a lot.

C4G: Alright. BAM! Zombie outbreak. Right now. Weapon of choice?

Claire: Katana for close-range, and a crossbow for long-range. Crossbow bolts are reusable so you don't have to worry about running out of ammo, just pull them out of the corpses. And of course blades don't need reloading.

C4G: Harry Potter or Edward Cullen?

Claire: Absolutely Harry Potter, hands down. Those books started coming out when I was 11, and I had a crush on him since book one. I still do! Haha.
