GEEK BABE of the MONTH: Julienne
As we strolled around the Comic-Con exhibitor hall looking for some cool cosplays to take pictures of, we bumped into this awesome looking Black Cat! We were able to talk to her for a bit, only to find out she's a pretty big Spider-Man lover! So, here's Julienne, our August Geek Babe of the Month.
C4G: Hey there Julienne! Let's have you introduce yourself to our readers.
Julienne: I'm Julienne. I'm originally from San Diego, California, and moved to hipster central, Portland, Oregon about five years ago to escape horrible rent prices and spray tans. I've worked in the veterinary field for about six years, and love it. I'm mostly a loner who sits around reading comics and facebooking on the regular, and my favorite pasttimes are eating french fries and anything involving photography, especially pinup photography.
I live alone with two cats in an apartment where the theme is: Hello Kitty, Spider-Man, Marilyn Monroe, Bettie Page & Lady Gaga, haha. Essentially, I decorate like a 13 year old. Beyond that, I spend a lot of time at the gym, and just finished turbo kickboxing instructor training, which I hope can make me more convincing as a super hero. With my ability to kick bad guys in the face.
C4G: So when we you for the first time at Comic-Con, you told us you were a huge Spider-Man fan. So... exactly how big of a fan are you?
Julienne: Ahhh! I've pretty much been in love with Spidey since I was eleven, which was the first time I wore a Black Cat costume. I'm naturally a blonde, so back then I hadn't dyed it the bright red it is now, so wigs weren't required. I always loved how Spidey was a dork, into photography, socially awkward, and still the best guy to ever exist, real or otherwise. My second love has always been Professor X. I mostly grew up on the FOX kids TV show, so I'd set my alarm every Saturday morning. Recently, I've started to get more and more into the comics as well. When the movies come out, I usually go see them a couple times opening weekend, then after I'll see them at a second run theater, so I guess you could say I love them with my entire heart. I also recently realized that my love for Spider-Man may be the reason I've always wanted red hair; even if Mary Jane was not my favorite character, she always won Peter's heart.
C4G: What's your most cherished/coolest Spidey collectible?
Julienne: Ahhh, not strictly a Spidey collectible, but at SDCC, J. Scott Campbell drew on my glove and signed it, and a nerdgasm occurred. I'll probably get it framed in a shadowbox to love forever.
C4G: Do you have a favorite Spider-Man story arc?
Julienne: Definitely the Return Of the Black Cat. I love how Spidey always tries to run back to Mary Jane, when clearly she isn't the one who can fulfill his needs.
C4G: Black Cat seems to be a favorite here. How about a favorite Spidey villain?
Julienne: Venom. Always Venom.
C4G: What do you think about the new Spider-Man film being released next year starring Andrew Garfield? Have high hopes?
Julienne: I really did love Tobey McGuire in the role, so I'm hoping Andrew Garfield can fill those big shoes. I'm hoping it doesn't disappoint; the third movie was just all over the place and not the best work of anybody involved.
C4G: Do you read any other comic series?
Julienne: I don't religiously follow any other series. When I go to the comics store if its not for Spider-Man, it's for books of art or toys.
C4G: So, if you can be ANY superhero (besides Spider-Man), who would it be, and why?
Julienne: I'd definitely be Professor Xavier. If I can't date him, might as well be him. There's something very impressive in how he helps so many people, and still can see the good in everybody when he can read their minds.
C4G: Alright, how about if you can DATE any superhero, who would it be and why?
Julienne: Is this a trick question? Spider-Man, clearly.
C4G: Well, yeah, that was a giveaway. I was just testing. But now, let's say you WERE Spider-Man, and the Marvel world was getting torn apart from the Superhero Registration Act, would you side with Cap or Iron Man?
Julienne: Cap. Iron Man was too much of a cocky rich dude for me to ever like him.
C4G: Okay, so we loved the Black Cat cosplay you wore at the convention. Did you make that yourself?
Julienne: I did! It was a lot of piecing together, but I was very happy with how it turned out.
C4G: What other cosplays do you do?
Julienne: This was my first time cosplaying! Next SDCC I'm planning a Seven of Nine inspired borg costume, and also the Black Cat, but revamped a bit.
C4G: Any upcoming conventions you plan on attending?
Julienne: I may go to Emerald City CC next year, since it's so close to home, and of course SDCC. Beyond that, I go to Viva Las Vegas, which is a huge rockabilly convention in Las Vegas happening the weekend of my birthday.
C4G: Alrighty, let's take a break from comics. How about movies? Do you have any favorite movies?
Julienne: My all time favorite movie was and always will be The Nightmare Before Christmas! When I was a kid, I lived for Halloween, and would sing along to the soundtrack daily. I love everything about it! The characters, the Danny Elfman score, the storyline, the artwork and all creativity that went into it... it was just so different than anything out there at that point in time.
C4G: Have any favorite televisions shows right now?
Julienne: Television has all been downhill for me since Buffy ended. Former favorites were Buffy, Invader Zim, and Daria.
C4G: Ah, I miss Buffy too, haha. Do you have any other cool geeky hobbies you'd like to tell us about?
Julienne: I looooove collecting anything Hello Kitty, Bettie Page, or Nightmare Before Christmas. As I said earlier, I decorate my apartment in the fashion of a 13 year old. I also spend most of my days off in the library, which, really, what's geekier than that?
C4G: Okay, shit has gone crazy. Zombies are everywhere! You have to leave your house, but you can only take 7 things with you. What would they be?
Julienne:
1. My cats.
2. Water.
3. Black Cat signed glove.
4. Hello Kitty messenger bag with all of the above inside of it.
5. Ninja shoes to kick zombies in the face.
6. iPod.
7. String lights from my wall to strangle zombies with.
