COMICS: Half Black, Half Hispanic ‘Miles Morales’ is The New Spider-Man

Posted on August 3, 2011

Back in April, we shared an image that teased the costume of a new Spider-Man. Details on who he was and where he came from? Well, that was a mystery. Then just two months ago, Peter Parker died in the "Death of Spider-Man" storyline within Marvel's Ultimate universe. Well, now it looks like we're going to be finding out who will be carrying on Peter's legacy: Miles Morales.

Miles Morales, a half-black, half-hispanic teenager, will make his debut appearance in Ultimate Fallout issue #4 today. While the issue will have Miles merely break-up a fight in costume, readers will soon find out out his origins in the Ultimate Spider-Man relaunch in September.

Axel Alonso, Marvel Editor-in-Chief, said this about the new Spider-Man:

“When the opportunity arose to create a new Spider-Man, we knew it had to be a character that represents the diversity—in background and experience—of the twenty-first century. Miles is a character who not only follows in the tradition of relatable characters like Peter Parker, but also shows why he’s a new, unique kind of Spider-Man—and worthy of that name.”

Oh, and if you're freaking out about this new Spider-Man thing, no worries. This storyline is strictly within the Ultimate universe. The Peter Parker we all know and love is till alive and well.

As for Miles Morales, I have to say I'm really interested in knowing where Marvel is going to be taking this story, especially Miles' connection to his predecessor, Peter. I'm also curious to know how he got his spider-powers (or if he has any powers). USA Today even states that Miles will have different abilities too.

The comic's writer, Brian Michael Bendis, on Miles Morales:

“The chance for the world to join a new Spider-Man as he discovers what that means in this modern world is one of the most challenging and crazy fun opportunities I’ve had as a writer. The Ultimate Comics Universe according to Miles is completely unique. I can't wait to write every issue and I can't wait for people to start reading them.”

Personally, I think this is great. I'm really open for fresh and new stories to read. While they have the original Peter Parker doing his own thing in Marvel's main universe, it's cool to know they're still keeping things fresh with twists and turns like these.

Sadly, not everyone feels this way (unsurprisingly). There's a lot of animosity towards the new Spider-Man. Here's a list of racial/hateful comments you can check out at Bleedingcool.com.
