MOVIES: Warner Bros. Green Lights ‘Akira’ Live-Action Film, Garrett Hedlund in Talks to Play Kaneda

Posted on October 20, 2011

After much time and difficulty the live-action film adaptation of Akira has finally been green-lit and will enter production early next year.

It was reported yesterday in the entertainment trade magazine Variety that Warner Bros. finally gave the ok to produce the film. Production of the film is scheduled to begin sometime between late February and early March of next year. It was previously reported that Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan, House of Wax) will be directing the film. Joining the development team is producer Andrew Lazar (Get Smart, Jonah Hex) and writer Albert Torres. Leonardo DiCaprio's production company Appian Way will be producing the movie.

Also, it has been reported that TRON 2 star, Garrett Hedlund, is currently the front runner to play the role of Kaneda, the film's protagonist.

Akira is an adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's manga by the same name. The manga was also adopted into an anime film back in July 1988.

  1. use japanese actors please!!

  2. do NOT use Japanese actors please.
ever watch actual Japaneses films . . .yeah they suck for a reason.
also in the anime most of the main characters look (at the closest) Greek not Japaneses.
Just because it’s a film based off from a Japaneses anime does not mean you have to have Japaneses actors, on top of all of that the American voice actors for the English version did a better job anyway.

  3. You must be fucking stupid if you think Kei and Kaneda don’t look Japanese from the Manga and motion picture.

What’s worse than supposed “bad acting”, is an actor that doesn’t fit the role. This is just Hollywood destroying shit again.
