MOVIES: ‘Samurai Jack’ Creator Hired to Direct 3D Animated’Popeye’

Posted on June 26, 2012

Last year, we reported that a new Popeye film was being developed, and that writers of The Smurfs, David Ronn and Jay Scherick, worked on the screenplay for Sony Pictures. Well, now it looks like the movie has a director in Samurai Jack creator, Genndy Tartakovsky.

Variety reports that Tartakovsky will be in the director's chair to adapt a 3D animated feature of the spinach eating salior. While Tartakovsky is currently working on his upcoming film, Hotel Transylvania (slated for a September 21st release), Popeye could likely be his next upcoming project. Of course, there are also plans to also bring his popular animated television show Samurai Jack to the big screen too, and last we heard of that, Tarsem Singh (Immortals, Mirror, Mirror), wanted to direct it.

Popeye... Samurai Jack... I guess we'll see what comes first.
