MOVIES: Mark Hamill Talks About His Return In ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’

Posted on February 21, 2013

luke-skywalkerWe've seen speculation that Harrison Ford could be back as Han Solo, but how about Mark Hamill? In a recent interview with EntertainmentWeekly, Mark Hamill has spilled some news on the next film in the Star Wars Saga and has announced that he may just reprise his role as the heroic rebel pilot and Jedi, Luke Skywalker.

Hamill is going to have some involvement in the next trilogy, however how big of a role he will play has yet to be determined. When asked about his thoughts of re-joining on board with the other co-stars from the original films, here's what he had to say:

"They're talking to us. George wanted to know whether we'd be interested. He did say that if we didn't want to do it, they wouldn't cast another actor in our parts – they would write us out. I can tell you right away that we haven't signed any contracts. We're in the stage where they want us to go in and meet with Michael Arndt, who is the writer, and Kathleen Kennedy, who is going to run Lucasfilm. Both have had meetings set that were postponed - on their end, not mine. They're more busy than I am."

He also expressed his desire about returning to the original feel of the first trilogy in EW's interview. Not surprisingly, he also mentioned that if he should return, he demanded that the remaining cast should follow suit as well:

"I said to George that I wanted to go back to the way it was, in the sense that ours was much more carefree and lighthearted and humorous – in my opinion, anyway. And another thing I'd want to make sure of is are we going to have the whole gang back? Is Carrie and Harrison and Billy Dee and Tony Daniels, everybody that's around from the original [returning]? I want to make sure that everybody's on board here, rather than just one. I guess I'll have to tune into your show to figure out who's on board."

As for the rumors circling that the movies could end up focusing on the children of the original characters (perhaps Jaina, Jacen and Anakin Solo), Hamill agrees with the theory and mentions:

"I'm assuming, because I haven't talked to the writers, that these movies would be about our offspring - like my character would be sort of in the Obi-Wan range - an influential character.”

Quite awesome to hear that Luke Skywalker can be making a reappearance. It's also interesting to hear who else might want to return for their roles for the next Star Wars films (Harrison Ford has been reported to also be on board). However, this brings up some possibilities for the time frame of this new trilogy. Could these movies occur during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion of the New Republic? Hopefully more hints of the new stories unravel soon. To see more of the interview, check out the original Entertainment Weekly article here.

  1. I think if all of the original people would do it, and the right script. It could be epic. Have to wait and see how it plays out.
